Every human being deserves the freedom to author their own life.
Yet that freedom is not equally distributed. For many people, the course of their lives is shaped by forces beyond their choosing—history, identity, institutions, perception, inequality, and systems of power. Where the freedom to author one’s life is constrained, those realities deserve to be examined with seriousness, honesty, intellectual rigor, and humanity.
Incongru exists to contribute to that work. Through essays, literature, criticism, poetry, visual art, reviews, and interdisciplinary inquiry, we examine the ideas, structures, and conditions that shape identity, dignity, agency, justice, and belonging. We seek not only to understand the world as it is, but to deepen conversation around it, imagine more humane possibilities, and contribute—however modestly—to the ongoing work of building them.
We believe that meaningful contributions can take many forms. Some works introduce new concepts. Others deepen understanding, illuminate overlooked realities, challenge inherited assumptions, ask difficult questions, move us emotionally, or imagine new possibilities. What unites every contribution is not its form, but its commitment to thoughtful inquiry, artistic integrity, and a deeper understanding of the human condition.
We welcome intellectual courage, artistic courage, and emotional honesty. We believe that difficult questions deserve careful thought, that complexity should be met with curiosity rather than certainty, and that genuine human emotion need not be made more palatable in order to be taken seriously.
